I was recently contacted by Megan MacIntosh who is Purple Martin Coordinator for Nature Canada. Megan asked questions about the Friends of the Sanctuary wondering what kind of organization we were. The reason for the call was as she informed me they are counting Purple Martin populations across the country which is in fast decline. She let me that know that no one in the Tri County area is doing this for them and I was very surprised. I do know several organizations and individuals that are very avid with the plight of the Purple Martin.
Although we have not yet discussed the specific details, the Friends of the Sanctuary will be spearheading a Purple Martin watch in SD&G hopefully this coming spring in conjunction with Nature Canada's guidance for information they require.
If you have Purple Martins or have an interest in helping this cause please keep your eyes on our website when hopefully soon we announce how we can assist Nature Canada this coming year helping the Purple Martin population in our area.
